In recent years, the population over the age of 65 has been increasing globally, and women appear to make up the majority. In the European Union (EU), in 2019, there were on average 1.33 women over the age of 65 for every man of the same age. This fact has brought to the forefront the need for special attention to their mental and cognitive health in both middle and older age.

  • Globally, the risk of developing dementia for individuals over 65 is higher for women, at a rate of 21.2% compared to 11.6% for men. In Greece, women represent 65% of people with Alzheimer’s disease, even when their longer life expectancy is taken into account. It is estimated that by 2050, 12.5% of women over 65 will suffer from dementia, compared to 7.9% of men.
  • Women in this age group also experience depression (7 out of 10 people with depression are women), distress, anxiety, and sleep disorders, hormonal changes due to menopause and the burden of multiple social roles (work and simultaneous caregiving)
  • Specific biological factors in women contribute to higher risks of Altzheimer and cognitive disorders
Women suffer from brain injuries due to IPV (Intimate Partner Violence). Globally, 75-90% of women that experience IPV sustain head trauma
  • Women spend 9more years in poor health than men, largely due to chronic brain and mental health conditions
  • Only 0,5% of neuroscience studies focus on women health-specific factors, despite women making up 50% of study participants

These statistical data highlight a biological and social particularity that can affect the mental and cognitive health of women and should not be overlooked.

Empowering Women’s brain health

The Hellenic Initiative for Women’s Brain Health (HIWOMB) is a science-driven initiative established under the MENTOR-Institute for Healthy Ageing, aiming to promote brain-healthy ageing and mental well-being among women.

The initiative is supported by a network of distinguished health professionals and researchers who are deeply committed to advancing women’s brain health. Through their expertise, they contribute to raising public awareness, delivering targeted education, promoting early detection and prevention strategies, and supporting research.

The aim of the Initiative is to highlight this important matter also in Greece, to explore possible unique biological and psychosocial risk factors that may contribute to the increased risk of cognitive decline and mental health challenges in women during midlife and older age, and to ensure adequate support for preventive strategies for cognitive well-being and brain-healthy ageing among women.

WHY?

Women in midlife and older age are significantly more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease and depression. Additionally, experience increased rates of, anxiety, sleep disturbances, “brain fog” symptoms related to menopause, brain injuries from IPV, loneliness, while often bearing the burden of the “sandwich generation” phenomenon — work and simultaneous caregiving roles ( care of children, elderly parents and often grand children)

Despite these challenges, women’s brain health remains underrepresented in public health strategies focused on women. Due to this his gap brain health issues are often addressed only after symptoms appear—without the opportunity for prevention or early, personalized intervention.
HIWOMB seeks to fill this gap through targeted, gender-sensitive interventions.

VISION

Our vision is to build a robust framework to ensure and protect the mental well-being of women throughout the middle and older stages of life. We aim to strengthen defense against the risk of cognitive decline and dementia through science-based prevention, awareness, education, and gender-focused research.

WOMEN’S MENTAL WELL-BEING

AWARENESS & ACTION

The Hellenic Initiative
for Women’s Brain Health (HIWOMB)
is dedicated to advancing
prevention and supporting
a Brain-Healthy lifestyle in Ageing.

OBJECTIVE

As part of our commitment to healthy ageing, our aim is to highlight:

The unique and disproportionate vulnerability sensitivity of women’s brain and mental health compared to men as they age,
the pivotal role of hormonal changes and the “neurological hormonal cycle” in shaping cognitive health during midlife. in middle-aged women,
The modifiable risk factors associated with the onset of dementia, which can be prevented through with early and reliable personalized interventions and care.

Everyone deserves
healthy-brain ageing

OUR APPROACH

With commitment to our vision and goals, and with responsibility and respect, we pursue [we embrace a ] the holistic approach to physical , mental, and social health . Our aim is to enhance cognitive well-being and improve the quality of life for women as they transition into midlife and beyond.

The initiative’s strategic actions focus on the following key pillars:

  • Awareness and Public Engagement: actions (campaigns) about the risk factors affecting brain health and mental well-being in women.
  • Education and Training on brain health for healthcare providers and public.
  • Early detection and Screening of emotional and cognitive difficulties.
  • Preventive, evidence-based, interventions in life-style to reduce the risk of cognitive decline and dementia.
  • Research.HIWOMB is committed to supporting and funding research essential for a deeper understanding of the increased risk of dementia and depression. Research will contribute to the development of more targeted, personalized, and effective biological-psychosocial strategies for prevention and treatment.
  • To develop policy recommendations and advocate for the integration of women’s brain health into national health agendas
